The end of January is nearing. How are those 2015 Organizing Goals coming along? Why didn’t I say “Resolutions?” When we make New Year’s Resolutions we think big, and big can be intimidating. So much so, that our resolve to make big changes quickly fades away as the year progresses. Getting organized is a very big resolution. One look at your cluttered space can make you feel defeated, even before you get started.
Instead, make “getting organized” your main goal. Your next step will be to decide on measurable objectives, which will help you achieve this goal. How much time are you willing to spend organizing a space? One day a week? One weekend a month? How much of your space can you organize during your allotted time? One closet? Half the bedroom?
Then decide on your strategies. What is your strategy, or reason, for organizing your closet? “I am always late for work because I can’t find clothes to wear.” Or, “I spend so much money on late fees because I misplaced my bills and forget to pay them.”
Finally, what tactics are you going to use to get organized? “First, I am going to empty the closet. Then I am going to sort through all the clothes. I am going to donate the clothes that are in good condition. I am going to recycle the clothing that is too worn. Finally, I am going to put what I am keeping back into the closet grouped by color.”
By using goals, objectives, strategies, and tactics, not only are you breaking down your project into smaller, more manageable pieces (an important organizing principle), but you are also more likely to achieve your goal of getting organized in 2015.
Happy New Year!
